Elon Musk plans flights to Mars in 2019 – Is this about Sustainability?

Elon Musk announces a plan to send a space vehicle to Mars as soon as next year with the ultimate goal involving planting seeds on the surface and establishing a human colony.

One has to agree with Elon when we see how politics and humanity are destroying the health of the planet. We all have the potential to do much MUCH better but how do we mitigate what was supposed to be a fair system of distribution, now corrupted, and create a benign paradigm? And from the book ‘Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the quest for a Fantastic Future’ he basically asks same. Research shows that inequality breeds crime, mental illness and reduces care by creating competition. Perhaps Elon Musk has the right idea – let’s get to Mars and leave the careless behind to drown in their own waste. But are we there yet? Can we turn it around? And do we care enough to conserve and even restore ecological balance through adjusting our own learning and behaviour?

Rate of environmental degradation puts life on Earth at risk, say scientists

Talk of sustainability is all around but little real action. There are signs of learning, teaching and consciousness around connecting with each other and the planet which is mostly grassroots and social media based. A lot of slacktivism but some good coming from that too. Some communities and countries have taken action and declared no more exploitation to forests, land and people – a general move to recognizing rights and health as a priority. This may mean doing with less but studies show the more we have does not make us any happier so learning to live with less may be learning to live better, happier and healthier. This is why education is so important – we can LEARN how to live a sustainable lifestyle and still enjoy life to the max. Hey Elon, let’s have a look here and see what we can do before we abandon spaceship earth – I think we still have a chance.
